How to use WS_FTP Pro to publish web pages

We will use WS_FTP Pro as an example to show you step by step how to publish your web pages. The other version should be very similar to use.

You need some information from your hosting company before you can successfully upload your web site to your server. Hosting company usually send you an email when you open your account with them.

You will need at least: Your Host Name, User ID and Password.

If you don't have the above information, you need to contact your hosting company for this.

1. Open the program
(click Start - Programs - WS_FTP Pro - WS_FTP PRO).

2. At the opening screen, click New to create a new connection profile.

3. Enter a descriptive Profile Name (such as eBook Web site).

4. Enter the Host Name (YourDomainHostName.com), your User ID, and your Password. Leave Host Type as it is (Automatic Detect).

If you want to save your password for future connections, check next to Save Pwd.

5. Click OK button. You will connect to your web server. Files and folders on your computer are listed on the left side of the main window. Files and folders on your space in the web server are listed on the right side.

6. By default, WS_FTP looks in the folder C:\Program Files\WS_FTP\ on your computer for files to transfer. If this isn't the right folder (it probably isn't), you can change it. Double-click the green arrow at the top of list on the left to "move up" the hierarchical structure on your computer, then double-click on folders to move down.

7. Once you have the folder that you want, click Options on the row of buttons at the bottom of the screen, click the Session tab, and then click the button that reads Save Current Directories as Connection Directories. (Directories and folders are the same thing.) This will save your preferences so you don't have to do this again.

8. In the right side of the window (on the remote server), Using the same method in 6 to find the directory/sub-directory where you want to transfer your web pages to.

9. Click the files and folders you want to transfer on the left (your desktop computer). To all select all files and folders, hold down the SHIFT key and click the first and last items in the list. To select a several individual files or folders, hold down the CTRL key as you click.

10. To transfer your files to the web server, click the arrow pointing right. This sends a copy of the selected files to the web server and makes your pages available to the public via the Internet.

11. To transfer files to your desktop computer from the web server, follow steps 9 and 10 but substitute right for left and left for right.

11. If you need to delete a file on the web server or your desktop computer, click the file and click the Delete button. To rename a file, click Rename. For more ways to use and customize WS_FTP, click the Help button.

After you transfer your files, make sure to check that they are available by opening your web browser and going to your Internet address (URL).

Then congratulate yourself -- it's done!
